SMITH HOLT

Contemporary Fine Art

I paint in two styles, both of which are often stimulated by the natural world. The first style is abstract and organic and is usually rendered in oil. The second is more formal and geometrical and is rendered in acrylic. The boundaries are not rigid and crossover does occur.

EARLY INTEREST

As a young boy my interest in art was, in part, stimulated by a collection of Sandzen and Fechin paintings in the neighborhood Carnegie Library. I enjoyed drawing at a young age and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take summer lessons when in elementary school. My interest continued through high school but I forewent any meaningful effort to produce art after that. College and career as a chemistry professor and university administrator consumed my time. However, through my work as Oklahoma State University Dean of Arts and Sciences, I was heavily involved with the OSU Art Department.

Teaching history: University of Copenhagen, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, University of Wyoming, University of Bordeaux, University of Georgia, Colorado College, and Oklahoma State University.

REVIVAL

Upon retirement in 2004, to Angel Fire, NM, I began to paint once again and to polish my skills by enrolling in workshops in Taos, NM. I regularly exhibited and sold at local shows and my art was carried by the local gallery. In 2010 we moved to Colorado Springs and soon after arrival I became a part-time visiting professor at CC. In 2017 I co-taught a course, The Science of Art. In the summer of 2018, I taught a week-long version of the same course at Oklahoma State University’s Doel Reed Center for the Arts in Talpa, NM, a small village outside of Taos.

In addition to pursuing my profession as an artist I reserve time to work with the American Association of University Women in engaging young women in STEM studies and careers.
